Abstract The demand‐control‐support model was developed by R. Karasek and his colleagues during the 1980s. The model operates with three main dimensions: job demands, job decision latitude and job Caption. Download PDF. back

Specifically, the study aims at testing the hypotheses of the Job Demand-Control (JDC) model (Karasek, 1979) and Job Demand-Control-Support (JDCS) model (Johnson & Hall, 1988; Karasek sion of decision latitude (Karasek, 1 978a). I suspect that many contradictory findings in the literature can be traced to incomplete models derived from these mutually exclusive research traditions. I suggest that a cor-rect analysis must distinguish between two important ele-ments of the work environment at the individual level: (1) imbalance model showed the stronger association with cardiovascular disease (whether angina or diagnosed ischemia): odds ratios ranged from 2.6 to 3.6 for different outcomes among men and women, compared to ORs ranging from 1.0 to 1.9 for the job control component of the Karasek model. Karasek's (1979) job demands-control model is one of the most widely studied models of occupational stress (de Lange, Taris, Kompier, Houtman, & Bongers, 2003). The key idea behind the job demands-control model is that control buffers the impact of job demands on strain and can help enhance employees’ job satisfaction with the opportunity to engage in challenging tasks and learn new skills ERI models, the JD-R model assumes that employee health and well-being result from a balance between positive (resources) and negative (demands) job character istics. As these two earlier models had already sensitized the hearts and minds of research ers and practitioners to the notion of balance, the JD-R model fell on fertile ground.

According to Kompier (2003) the JD-C model is presently one of the most influencing models of stress in occupational health. The job demands-resources model or JD-R model is an occupational stress model that suggests strain is a response to imbalance between demands on the individual and the resources he or she has to deal with those demands. The JD-R was introduced as an alternative to other models of employee well-being, such as the demand-control model and the effort-reward imbalance model. It describes the demand-control model, which has had a huge influence on research on work and health. The model was prompted by Karasek's concern about the consequences of demand-control imbalances in the workplace. Karasek and Theorell provide a vision of humane organizations in which employees can master challenges and experience personal growth.

The Job Demand-Control model of Karasek is a theoretical model in which stress and learning are both considered as dependent variables which are influenced by three different task characteristics: job demands, job control, and social support. This model was tested for Dutch secondary teachers (n = 542).
