2 Though longtime practitioners, having weathered decades of suspicion from more traditional col-leagues, have largely welcomed an influx of newcomers into the field— the theme of the 2011 Digital Humanities Conference was “The Big Tent,” a metaphor much Debates in the Digital Humanities is as much a success as it is a failure. It is at its best when the essays and blog posts illuminate, either directly or obliquely, the tensions and cracks in the definitions and practices of digital humanities (DH) by discussing the field’s practices and the theories that govern them. Debates in the Digital Humanities brings together leading figures in the field to explore its theories, methods, and practices and to clarify its multiple possibilities and tensions. Published in January 2013, the open-access edition of Debates in the Digital Humanities marked not just the opening up of the printed text, but also the debut of a custom-built social reading platform.

Debates in the Digital Humanities. Under the direction of Matthew K.
